Software Engineering Student Shares His Japan Exchange Story

Mao Roma, a Software Engineering student from Kirirom Institute of Technology, recently embarked on a three-month exchange program in Japan, alongside two other KIT students, Ros Mengheang and Oeng Chihea. Having arrived on July 23, 2025, Roma is now two weeks into this immersive experience, which includes a four-day field study that provided a unique blend of technological insights and cultural immersion.

The exchange program in Japan, including the recent field study in Hiraizumi–Iwate, was designed to provide a hands-on learning experience, exposing KIT students to Japanese industry, innovation, and culture. For Roma, the inspiration to join stemmed from a deep-seated interest in Japan's unique ability to balance technological advancement with preserved tradition. "I wanted to see firsthand how Japanese companies apply innovation in their daily operations, and how culture influences the way people work and interact," Roma explained. He believed this comprehensive experience would broaden his perspective, foster personal and professional growth, and provide insights unattainable through conventional learning methods.

Adapting to a new country and culture presented both excitement and initial challenges for Roma. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mind, observing local customs, and learning basic Japanese phrases to facilitate respectful communication. "Being curious and willing to try new things—like local food, public transportation, and traditional etiquette—helped me adjust quickly," he noted, highlighting his proactive approach to cultural integration.

The four-day field study, a key component of his exchange, proved instrumental in equipping Roma with valuable skills and knowledge directly applicable to his future career. "This field study helped me gain valuable insights into real-world work environments and how professionals in Japan approach problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation," Roma stated. He was particularly impressed by the deep-rooted values of discipline, attention to detail, and continuous improvement observed in Japanese workplaces. Beyond technical insights, the program also honed essential soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and cultural awareness, crucial for navigating diverse professional teams.
