Two Software Engineering Students Lead DX Projects in Hiraizumi, Japan

At KIT, students are encouraged to go beyond classroom learning and apply their skills in real-world environments. For two Software Engineering students from Batch 11, Suon Vannputhika and Sopheakvethya Syna, this meant embracing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a 3-month internship in Hiraizumi, Japan.

Launched in mid-April 2025, the internship program focuses on Digital Transformation (DX) and regional revitalization. As part of this initiative, the students are actively involved in projects that aim to modernize and promote local communities through innovative digital solutions. From supporting local businesses to enhancing digital infrastructure, their work has a direct impact on the development of Hiraizumi Town.

Beyond technical growth, the internship provides deep cross-cultural immersion. Living and working in Japan allows students to experience a new culture, build global connections, and develop a broader perspective on technology and community development.

Embracing the Challenge Abroad

In late April, Vannputhika and Sopheakvethya embarked on a 3-month internship in Japan, working on digital transformation initiatives with a local lacquerware company. “I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture and work ethics,” Vannputhika shared. “So when I saw the opportunity to intern in Hiraizumi, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted to challenge myself by stepping outside my comfort zone and experiencing real-world tech projects in a different cultural context.” he continued.

The internship centered around software development, with the two students contributing to the creation of a digital system designed to streamline the design process for the traditional Japanese craft business.

Skills That Matter in the Global Tech Industry

Throughout the internship, Sopheakvethya and Vannputhika developed a wide range of skills that extend far beyond the classroom. “I improved my social media marketing and Japanese communication skills and I also learned how to develop software with a focus on security, something that’s crucial in today’s tech landscape.” Sopheakvethya shared. These skills are not only valuable academically, but are also essential for building a career in the international job market.

Adapting to a New Culture and Environment

Moving to a new country with a different language and culture presented its challenges. “At first, it was a bit overwhelming, especially the language barrier and lifestyle differences,” Vannputhika admitted. However, his approach to adaptation was rooted in openness and a willingness to learn.

Exploring a new experience requires more than just technical knowledge; it demands flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and a willingness to learn. “I tried my best to use the Japanese language skills I had and learned their manners for greeting, eating, and daily interactions,” Sopheakvethya shared. These efforts helped him adapt more easily to his new environment.

Sopheakvethya enthusiastically encourages other KIT students to consider this opportunity. “I strongly recommend this internship, especially for those who want to work in Japan after graduation. You don’t just learn about the culture, food, and scenery, you become part of their daily life and working environment,” he said. 

Vannputhika said, “It’s a rare opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. You not only gain practical experience but also develop a global mindset, which is essential in today’s interconnected world.”
